Parents get the course at Delaware Valley open house

WESTFALL Clutching a schedule in one hand and a map in another, Delaware Valley High School parents looked extraordinarily like their children on their first day of school, as they navigated the halls last Wednesday night at DV’s annual open house. The two-hour open house gave parents and guardians the opportunity to walk through their child’s schedule for the night, visiting teachers and hearing presentations on what the year’s curriculum will be like. After a 10-minute introduction in the auditorium, teachers in the English Department began their presentations around the complex. In Mrs. Leslie Lordi’s Journalism and Advanced English 9 classroom, parents were not only shown via SMART Board what their children will be learning this year, but also excerpts from the student newspaper, the Del.Aware. The English teachers were given 15 minutes to talk with the “older versions” of their students, when Social Studies began at 7:30. Following that time slot, the Science Department’s presentation came at 7:45, Social Studies subsequently, then Math, World Languages, and Health/ Gym. Marlene Ramirez, who has a daughter, Kiana, in 11th grade and a son at Dingman Delaware Middle School deemed the whole night “very informative.” “The teachers were all presenting us with information with the SMART Boards, which was a step above,” the mom said at the end of the evening. Sharon Chamberlain agreed with the proficiency of the SMART Board presentations, as well as their presenters, who she thought were “very well prepared.” She has a freshman son and a 6th-grade daughter. Her only criticism was that there was not enough time at the open house; at the end of a homework-packed night, her children probably feel the same. Overall, with more than 500 attendees, the open house seemed to be an informative success, winding hallways and all.
