Public meeting for the Lacawac Sanctuary master site plan
Monday April 13 at 6 p.m. HAWLEY Lacawac Sanctuary invites residents, school officials, and others interested in the future development of the Sanctuary to attend a public meeting on Monday, Apr. 13 at 6 p.m. at the PPL Wallenpaupack Environmental Learning Center. This will be the first of two public meetings in the drafting of a Master Site Plan, to be completed in June of this year. The purpose of the meeting is to describe two potential concepts for the Sanctuary’s infrastructure, discuss goals for the future, and to solicit ideas and opinions from the public. Jen Naugle, Board Chairman, said, “The mission of the Lacawac Sanctuary is to: preserve our glacial lake, its watershed, surrounding forest and land, and historic buildings; educate the public on the environment and the wise use of our resources; and promote ecological research, scholarly interaction, and the training of scientists. “The Sanctuary encompasses 510 acres, including a mature second-growth forest, two ponds, several wetlands, over one mile of shoreline on Lake Wallenpaupack the Watres Lodge and supporting outbuildings listed on the National Historic Registry, and Lake Lacawac, a glacial lake registered as a National Natural Landmark. As a non-profit organization in NEPA, our audience is the residents, visitors, schools and universities of the region. We’re looking for input on our plans for expanding the existing infrastructure and programs at Lacawac. This public meeting is an important part of the planning process.” The Lacawac Sanctuary Master Site Plan Committee is being assisted by the firm of Simone Collins Landscape Architecture. The plan is funded in part by grants from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Lackawanna Valley Heritage Authority.
