School board member resigns

Dingman — First-year Delaware Valley School Board member John Wladar has submitted his resignation from the board. Citing personal reasons, the Shohola resident dated his resignation to Sept. 18, the night of the board’s monthly meeting. Following that meeting, Board President Bob Goldsack said Wladar has been dealing with health issues. Wladar has been absent from board meetings for most of the year. Board Solicitor Michael Weinstein said the law requires that the board replace a lost member by appointment within 30 days. They may take longer, but after 30 days district residents may petition the county court to name a replacement. The appointed member would be required to run in the next board election cycle, 2009, for the remainder of Wladar’s term, and then again in 2011 for a new term. Given the time frame, board members agreed to add a special voting meeting, where a replacement could be named, to the agenda of their Oct. 9 work session meeting. Several potential candidates were on hand at the meeting last week, including past board members Jack Fisher and Charles Pike, and 2007 candidate Susan Schor. Pike said he was “thinking about” becoming a candidate. Schor announced that she would be a candidate, but learning of Fisher’s plan to seek the vacant seat, said she would defer, preferring to see Fisher returned to the board. Wladar was elected in 2007 with a conservative, Taxpayers United slate, which also included John Kupillas and Diane French. Goldsack, who organized the Taxpayers United effort that has produced the current board majority, said he anticipated that the group would also provide a candidate, but did not provide a name, saying he had no definite commitment in hand. The special meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Shohola Elementary School cafeteria.
