WESTFALL n The Delaware Valley High School blood drive achieved a new DV record of 138 pints of blood donated, surpassing the school’s goal by 18 pints! Students took part in our 29th Annual Bloodmobile on Apr. 26. Out of the 155 students registered to give blood, 120 students were first time donors. This year the school participated in something new at the blood drive called “double reds.” In this type of donation two pints of red blood cells are taken from the donor and the plasma and other blood components are then returned to the donor’s body. Only male students weighing over 150 pounds were eligible to take park in “double reds.” Twelve students and one staff member took part in this program. Many students were involved in the blood drive effort. Mrs. Sue Briggs, Health Occupations instructor, and her HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) students helped out by escorting blood donors to the canteen and delivering blood bags to the Red Cross staff. Delaware Valley’s Family and Consumer Science teachers and students baked dozens of delicious chocolate chip cookies, and the Warrior Café’s staff and students prepared a wonderful lunch for the Red Cross staff. Special thanks also went to the Westfall McDonald’s for donating the juice, cups and napkins at the canteen. Sponsors said the success of this year’s blood drive was a team effort.
