Soap Box Derby signups begin soon

    PORT JERVIS, N.Y. — Beginning its ninth year, the the Port Jervis Soap Box Derby is ready to sign up 2008 drivers to become a part of one of the largest Soap Box Derby Races in the world. Derby Day is Sunday, June 8 this year and takes place on Sussex Street in Port Jervis. Children ages 8 to 18 are invited to join the fun as they compete in three divisions of derby cars. Three champions will be named race day to go on to Akron, Ohio to compete in the All-American Soap Box Derby Race. A champ in each division will win a trip of a lifetime to represent Port Jervis in this International Race in July. Port Jervis resurrected Derby Day nine years ago in honor of the days of old when drivers raced to glory. Car kits are now purchased in conjunction with the All-American Derby, but must still be assembled by derby drivers along with their parents and/or sponsors. Port Jervis Soap Box Derby signups are at the Port Jervis Youth Center, 135 Pike Street, Port Jervis, on Sunday, March 2, 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Thursday, March 6, 6 to 8:30 p.m. The car order deadline is Sunday, March 9. All prices include the entrance fee. All painting and decaling must be done by car owner at their expense. All cars are to be built by the driver/owner of the car. Other important Derby Dates include a mandatory meeting at Port Jervis Middle School, Wednesday, Apr 16 and practice dates on Jersey Avenue in Port Jervis including: Wednesday, Apr. 30 for stock, Monday, May 5 for Superstock & Masters, Thursday, May 8, for all divisions, Wednesday, May 14, for Superstock & Masters, Monday, May 19 for Stock, and Thursday, May 29 for all divisions.
