5K run/walk at Gold Key to help first responders and military

| 02 Aug 2017 | 11:33

— The Gold Key Country Club will celebrate first responders and military servicemen and -women by holding a 5K run/walk, Tunnel to Towers, on Sunday, Sept. 10.
The event is dedicated to the memory of FDNY hero and father of five Stephen Siller, who lost his life on 9/11. All proceeds will go to Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to providing services for the nation’s first responders and military. Through its Building for America’s Bravest program, dozens of customized high-tech “smart homes” have been built throughout the country for catastrophically injured service members. These homes, created primarily for triple-and quadruple-amputees as a result of IED explosions, have specialized features run off iPads to allow them to lead as independent a life as possible.
The Pike County/Gold Key run/walk will honor firefighters, police officers, EMTs, paramedics, as well as military service heroes "who serve, sacrifice and protect us every day." It will start at 106 Log Tavern Way in Milford and will wind its way around beautiful Gold Key Lake and finish at the beach/deck area.
Registration is now officially open. Participants may register online at T2Trun.org.
The Pike County/Gold Key Country Club 5K Run/Walk is the latest of dozens of 5K runs/walks held all around the United States in support of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
Lee Romano is the event director. For more information email pikecounty@tunnel2towers.org, call 570-686-3811, or visit T2Trun.org.
About Stephen SillerSiller was off-duty when the first plane hit the World Trade Center. He drove to his Brooklyn firehouse and retrieved more than 60 pounds of his gear, then sought the quickest route to the scene.
Finding the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel blocked, in a supreme act of heroism, Siller ran about three miles with that gear, to the Twin Towers, where he perished.
