Delaware Valley basketball has begun. The girls’ team started their season on December 2. The boys started on December 3.

Freshmen boys started with a game against Nanticoke Area. I was stunned by the height and size of the Delaware Valley freshman boys. D.V. usually suffers from lack of height and these freshmen were as big as some of the varsity teams in the past.

Size proved to be the name of the game. D.V. jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the first period. They would never relinquish their lead. They just kept piling on the points

By half time D.V. was up 31-18.

This was mainly due to power rebounding at both ends of the court. D.V. got multiple shots at the basket while denying N.A. any second shots. If Nanticoke didn’t make their first shot, they didn’t get any more while D.V. got 2, 3 and 4 shots to make points.

D.V. also had smothering defense. They stole the ball frequently, blocked shots and stole inbound passes.

In the third period both teams got over-anxious. Both made bad passes that were intercepted, and both made bad decisions, shooting from awkward positions and missing some shots that should have been easy. Yet the third period ended with D.V. up 47-28.

In the forth period, with D.V. up by 25 points, (Had been hotter shooters it could have been 50 points), even still the benches were cleared. Everyone got in to play.

So the game ends with D.V. winning at 63-32.

This bodes well for the future of D.V. basketball. They are tall, talented, determined and disciplined. Imagine if these kids actually grow some more.
