DV Lady Warriors lose nail-biter against Notre Dame Lady Spartans
MILFORD — Notre Dame Junior/Senior High School (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) defeated Delaware Valley High School (Westfall, Pa.) in girls varsity basketball on Wednesday, Dece. 28. The final score was 58-56.
The game was part of the two day 40th Annual Milford-Matamoras Rotary Stephen E. Faller Holiday Basketball Tournament that concluded on Dec. 30. DVHS hosted the tournament. Other participating schools were Kittatinny Regional High School, Minisink Valley High School, Valley Central High School, East Stroudsburg Senior High School North, and Notre Dame Junior/Senior High School.
A steady flow of score board lead changes defined this contest. Through most of the court battle, no more than five or six points or less separated the Delaware Valley Lady Warriors and the Notre Dame Lady Spartans.
Delaware Valley was ahead 56-55 with 17 seconds left to play in regulation. But Notre Dame was able to fill the basket to pull ahead 58-56 with four seconds left on the game clock. As time ran down, Delaware Valley's Jenna Pacella launched the ball from half court in a "Hail Mary" shot that bounced off the backboard and in the basket as the crowd roared. But the officials immediately ruled the throw happened after the buzzer went off, allowing Notre Dame to finish on top for the win.
Krista Kissell scored a game high 35 points for Notre Dame. Hannah Durham contributed 10 points for Notre Dame.
Hannah Gallagher scored 14 points for Delaware Valley. Ciera Cavallaro scored 10 points Delaware Valley. Jenna Pacella scored 9 points and Stephanie O'Grady scored 7 points, respectively, for Delaware Valley.
In the consolation game on Friday, Delaware Valley High School defeated East Stroudsburg Senior High School North (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) 39-24.
Also on Wednesday Kittatinny Regional High School (Newton, N.J.) defeated East Stroudsburg Senior High School North, 66-27.
In the championship game on Friday Kittatinny Regional High School defeated Notre Dame Junior/Senior High School, 54-41.
