State accepting LIHEAP applications into March
HARRISBURG Applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program are still being accepted. LIHEAP is a federally funded program administered by the state Department of Public Welfare. The program offers two types of heating assistance grants to low-income residents. Cash grants of up to $300 are available to help pay monthly heating bills, while crisis grants can help with the cost of heating emergencies. These include broken heating equipment or leaking lines, a lack of fuel or termination of utility service. The funding does not need to be repaid and no lien is placed on the recipients’ homes. “Fuel and home heating costs are rising rapidly,” Siptroth said. “LIHEAP is an essential but limited resource. I encourage eligible residents to apply in a timely fashion.” Applicants must be able to provide names, birthdates and Social Security numbers for everyone living in the household. They must also have proof of household income and a recent heating bill. The following chart outlines the LIHEAP income eligibility requirements: Household size Income 1 $14,700 2 $20,535 3 $25,755 4 $30,975 For each additional person Add $5,220 The amount of assistance given is based on the type of fuel used to heat the home and where the applicant lives. To find out more or apply to the program, residents can contact the toll-free LIHEAP hotline at 1-866-857-7095. Internet users can access additional information at www.dpw.state.pa.us, keyword “LIHEAP.” LIHEAP information is also available in Siptroth’s constituent service office in Marshalls Creek, phone: 570-223-2636. The deadline to apply for LIHEAP this year is March 21, or when funds have been depleted, whichever comes first.
