Ten bar association scholarships awarded

Siegel, Blumberg and Krawitz memorial scholarships go to DV students MILFORD — The Pike County Bar Association (PCBA) awarded ten scholarships to the Class of 2010. Nine $500 scholarships and one $1,000 awards were presented to local high school seniors this spring. On June 9, PCBA President Elizabeth Erickson Kameen, Esq. presented seven scholarships to Delaware Valley High School (DVHS) seniors. On June 18, Past PCBA President/Past Treasurer Anthony Waldron delivered three scholarships to Wallenpaupack Area School District High School (WASD) seniors. PCBA Merit Scholarships Six $500 scholarships are awarded annually to six students; three Delaware Valley High School Seniors and three Wallenpaupack Area School District Seniors. DV recipients were Caitlin Anderson, Nicolle Herzog and Gregory Callaghan In the top of her class, Caitlin Anderson is a member of Science Olympiad, Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science, Junior Historians, United Way Day of Caring, a volunteer for multiple organizations and a flute player, with Penn State University at University Park on the horizon. Nicolle Herzog’s great love of education is reflected in her class rank along with her membership in the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and National Society of High School Scholars. As Class Vice President, she demonstrates outstanding leadership skills which she will take with her to Bucknell University. Gregory Callaghan was: AP Class record holder, a Mock Trial member, a Junior Historian, Scholastic Bowl captain, member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Harvard Summer Program a Science Olympiad competitor, and volunteer for multiple wonderful organizations, The College of William and Mary will be fortunate to get him. The Arthur B. Siegel Humanitarian Scholarship (one award) His widow, Miriam Siegel, presented the Arthur B. Siegel Humanitarian Scholarship to this year’s winner Sarah Gilmour. At the top of her class, Vice President of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Scholastic Bowl, Junior Historians, National History Day, National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, Mu Alpha Theta President, Varsity Tennis, Science Olympiad, Art Club, AP Scholar Award, National Society of High School Scholars, Sarah Gilmour still found time for countless community assistance projects including Veteran’s Day Dinner, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Holocaust Project, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, United Way Day of Caring, and Big Sister program. The Matthew D. Blumberg Memorial Scholarship (two awards) The first Blumberg Scholarship recipient, Mira Lazaroff, has plans to pursue a degree in Child Psychology. Erickson Kameen commented that “Mira Lazaroff has demonstrated a life long interest in helping children by her extensive community service work including the Port Jervis Book Buddy System and as a camp counselor. Involved in drama, AP classes, work with children at the JCC, Youth Group, Student Council, and Future Business Leaders of America, this bright and giving student is a perfect recipient for this award. Her hard work and dedication to her community and to her class are commendable including her previous leadership role as class advisor and class secretary. Mira Lazaroff will be a natural when it comes to helping children”. Blumberg Scholarship recipient, Emily Guerra, “has an interest in Elementary Education, has played teacher from an early age, has a long history of assisting children from Genuine Alternative in Therapy Riding Stable to Youth Group and is Captain of Swim Team and Tennis. With a strong desire to excel in the field of Elementary Education, with an emphasis on sports and fitness, Emily Guerra clearly possesses those attributes for which the Blumberg Scholarship was established. On behalf of the PCBA, we are proud of her accomplishments and wish her all the best as she embarks upon her college career” said PCBA Erickson Kameen. The Dr. Sidney L. Krawitz Scholarship (one $1,000 award) Dr. Krawitz award winner, Valerie Langberg was: National Honor Society president, Varsity Scholastic Bowl Captain, a peer mediation district leader; a Science Olympiad competitor, a Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science and Reading Team member, a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist, Head of Junior Historians, and a community volunteer including Veteran’s Dinner, Senior Citizens’ Night, Holocaust Survivors’ Night, Food Pantry, Salvation Army and school beautification projects and overall number one student in class rank. President Erickson Kameen said “our hats are off to an incredibly well-rounded and gifted group of students.
