The Print Shop of Milford: they print 4 U

MILFORD Jeff and Roberta (Bobby) Sidle have been in the printing business since 1989. First, they were across from Apple Valley and now, in the current location for more than 10 years. The Print Shop is a busy, successful professional full-service print and copy shop with friendly, personalized care which is truly local and home-grown. Luckily I was able to pull Jeff away from all of his machines for this interview. PCC: How did you get into this business? JS: My grandfather, J.Vance Hunt, was the former publisher of the News Eagle. When he sold the newspaper, he kept the printing business in Hawley. When I was in junior high school, I came up for summers from VA. and worked in the shop and learned the trade. After high school, I moved to Pennsylvania to live with my grandparents. PCC: That’s almost like having printer’s ink in your veins. JS: It was a great education. I worked full time for my grandparents after high school and later had a stint with the Wayne Independent. Those were interesting times. I was able to be in the middle of the transition from hot metal type to the first computerized typesetting machines that now allow us to do desktop publishing. PCC: But, you do more than printing and copying. I know you have helped me, (and others from neophyte to sophisticated) with design suggestions, logos, and actual designs. How did you learn that? JS: I just learned by doing. It’s fun to have someone come in with a concept and then, if they wish, for me to be able to design it so it works professionally and is eye-catching and easy to read. PCC: What are the types of printing jobs do you do? JS: We basically do print jobs for other small businesses and a lot of non-profits. We do both analog and digital photocopying, digital desktop design, and offset and digital printing. We print invitations, certificates, business cards, business forms, stationery, holiday cards, and booklets. We also do blueprint copying. Our blueprint copier can reproduce blueprints up to 36 inches wide and however long the clients want. PCC: Is there anything you won’t copy or print? JS: I won’t and can’t copy copyrighted material. We are legally bound not to do that. PCC: What part of the business does Bobby handle? JS: She does a lot of the copying and handles all the billing and the administrative side of the business. PCC: How long have you and Bobby been together? JS: Since 1977. PCC: Isn’t it tough working with your wife and then going home together? JS: In the beginning of our relationship we didn’t see much of each other at all. I worked days and she held down two or three jobs. Then we bought the printing business and now it’s 24-7. It’s not a problem. We get along great. PCC: You seem to have a lot of hobbieslike making honey and great wine and hunting and fishing. JS: It’s mostly for fun. I just completed my third season of raising bees. I’ve entered my honey in some fairs and I mostly give it to friends and family. The honey is also available for purchase in limited quantities in the shop. PCC: What about the great fruit wine you make? JS: Now that is just for friends and family. PCC: And, need I ask about the hunting and fishing? JS: That’s when I have the timeand that’s just for me.
