The river ran through it

Three different one-hundred-year floods have come and gone recently, but the aftermath remains. The Courier’s ranger-led, July 17 tour of some devastated areas in the Water Gap recreation area thoroughly explained why the National Park Service is committed to continuing the annual river cleanup. Pictured here, Park Ranger Victor Perez points to the location where the home he stood atop used to be located before floating down the river during a flood in 2004. On Wednesday, July 25, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is sponsoring a clean-up day covering 40 miles of the river. The cleanup, runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with all amenities provided. Volunteers are needed and should contact Johnny Carawan at 570-426-2478 to pre-register by Sunday. (Photo by Nick Troiano)
