Yubin Choi shines at festival

WESTFALL Delaware Valley sophomore cellist Yubin Choi, daughter of Seung and Miae Choi of Milford, represented DVHS at the annual Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) Regional Orchestra Festival. The festival was held at Reading High School, Feb. 24 to 27. While the students missed more than half of their rehearsal time due to snowy weather, DVHS Orchestra Director David Swinehart said they presented a truly amazing concert on Saturday, Feb. 27th. The guest conductor for the festival was Dr. Dennis M. Layendecker, who retired recently as a full colonel from the US Air Force, having served 26 years on active duty. In his final assignment he served as Commander, Music Director and Principal Conductor of The United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. Together, the students and Dr. Layendecker presented for the audience Alexander Borodin’s “Prince Igor Overture” and “Polovtsian Dances” as well as Tchaikovsky’s entire “Symphony #5.” Swinehart said that due to her fantastic work and spectacular re-audition at the festival, Choi earned an opportunity to attend PMEA All-State Orchestra in Pittsburgh in mid-April.
