Bad directions
The direction that the school board meeting of Apr. 23 had taken truly saddened me. Sue Shore questioned the capabilities of our teachers while Pam Lutfy could not understand why it took so long to improve our curriculum even though she has been sitting on the board for over eight years. A discussion of new curriculum led Sue Shore to question whether our teachers could handle all the change. She stated that a change in all three content areas is a lot to handle for our teachers and that they may not be able to adjust. This statement took me back and I stated that the teachers in the district are more than capable, which the administration strongly agreed with. Obviously Ms. Shore who is not a teacher does not understand the education and training a teacher receives before she/he even steps into the classroom. As an educator I received two years of training in classroom procedures, curriculum and management. It truly surprises me that she does not understand that when a teacher either changes schools, grades or district she/he must learn the curriculum and procedures, yes all of it. Sue this is what we attend college for. I find it insulting that you think so little of our teacher’s capabilities. I know that you do not have the expertise in this area, maybe you should stay where you have the knowledge, Co-Curricular (clubs and sports). You profess to have education in the forefront, but I remember that over the past ten years that I have attended School Board meetings, you were there yes, to fight for the grass carpet and the bleachers. Lastly, Pam Lutfy had the audacity to ask why it took ten years for the district to change the curriculum, if Ms. Lutfy thought it was so important then why did she do nothing the past eight plus years she has sat on the board. Since taking over as chair of Special Education I have not heard of any new programs or curriculum being suggested or researched, in fact when was the last time there was a committee meeting? I find it interesting that people can criticize others for working hard and coming up with new ideas for our district, and yet have nothing to offer. I do not want to fall into the ways of past school boards, I want the momentum to continue towards higher education and lower taxes.
