Can it be true?
Re; the Pike County Humane Shelter: I doubt they are charging people $125.00 to adopt a kitten? It really has to be a typographical error and the actual fee must be $12.50. How on earth would people, who can’t even see themselves supporting a library at $37 a year, afford to adopt a kitten for that ridiculous sum? Especially with ads in newspapers that offer free kittens to good homes. That much money might be a family’s food costs for a week. And owning a pet is not inexpensive. Pets need the same care that a child does: food, medical assistance, grooming, as well as loving kindness. We have adopted pets for many years and we have never had to pay for the privilege. We were always asked for a small donation, which we made gladly. I realize it is a rough job caring for many of the lost and displaced animals .Perhaps if the shelter would print out the actual cost to feed the animal for a week, the cost of the spaying or neutering of the particular pet, an adoptive prospect might be willing to pay that sum. It might ease the pain and give the pet a new and loving home. Janeth De Graw Milford Editors note: The numbers are correct. Humane Society Executive Director Barry Heim estimates that the shelter may spend up to $200 per animal in veterinary and other costs preparing an animal for adoption. Lower fees are charged for older animals because most people initially go to the shelter looking for kittens and puppies.
