Correct spelling of street names

I wonder why there is so much confusion with how to spell the street name, Harford Street? I see it spelled on the street signs as that, yet notice that current businesses, new businesses and among other usages that it is also spelled out as “Hartford Street”. Can anyone, a historian or someone who has expertise in this area, please attempt to clarify this question for me? If it turns out that the correct spelling is Harford and not Hartford, I am wondering what the cost would be for our local businesses to amend their websites, letterhead, business cards, etc. to make their addresses reflect the correct name of the street they operate from and is this just a concern of one local resident? Upon writing my letter, I realized that the same situation occurs with Catharine Street. Some spell it as Catherine, rather than Catharine, and so again, I wonder why. Jamie Velsor Milford Editor’s note: Harford and Catharine are correct. The Harfords were among Milford’s earliest settlers and Milford streets were named after the children of founder and designer of the borough’s street plan, Judge John Biddis.
