Fall Arbor Day 2009 report

| 29 Sep 2011 | 04:38

Again this year and for the last 28 years community volunteers have worked with the Milford Shade Commission to plant young trees in various right-of-way sites in the borough. The trees were made possible through a special grant program from the Northeast Pennsylvania Urban & Community Forestry Program, special bareroot tree offer, under the direction of Forester Vinnie Cotrone, and Arborist Bernie Dincher. We are grateful for their effort in helping us maintain the renewal component of our tree program again this year. We are also grateful for all the volunteers who generously donated their time and effort to plant 20 beautiful, large, bare root trees: Alan Gatzke, Paul Labounty, Susan Ujvary, Pauline Schear, Tom Duncan, Martin McDonough, Ron Papa, and, Jerry Papa. They planted two Red Oaks, one Sweet Gum, four Pin Oak, 11 Maples, one London Plane, and one Elm. Also, we’d like to thank Community Rental Center, Inc., on US Routes 6&209 for their generous help in providing an auger and trailer to dig the holes, and to Fretta’s Italian Food Specialties on Broad Street for their wonderful Hot Dish lunch after all the work was done. The Milford Shade Tree Commission is a grass-roots organization that depends on community volunteers and contributions in order to maintain a systematic tree program. Due to our national economic crisis, the USDA Forest Service Grant Program has been permanently cancelled. We have had no federal grant money for two years now. So, as you think about end-of-year tax deductions to non-profit organizations, please include the Milford Shade Tree Commission. Send all contributions to: Valerie Meyer, 215 West Ann Street, Milford, PA 18337. Help Save the Milford Forest. Valerie Meyer Milford
