Back and forth on backyard chickens
A lively conversation about whether chickens make good neighbors developed on the Courier's Facebook page in response to last week's article "No backyard chickens in Dingman, supervisors decide."
Mike Elston: How was anyone to know this was to be discussed? If the public was made more aware, I am sure residents who have chickens would have come to discuss this. To read about it after the fact does no one any good.
How insane is this anyway ? If you don't want woodland critters in your back yard, live in the city...
This chicken ban is crazy, what is this township coming to? Next thing will they ban people from having pet dogs????
Samantha Trudgeon: Did you know about this hearing? I would have gone had I known, as well.
Jeanette Espinal: This really infuriates me — I didn't even know.
Joli Taryla: I was not aware of the hearing. I am the one that proposed the whole thing, and I must have missed the announcement. I would be at every board meeting if Tuesday wasn't one of only 3 evenings that I work — it isn't over.
Phyllis Simpson: Keeping chickens is a responsibility to keeping them safe from natural predators. An ill-built and poorly maintained coop results in their slaughter. There would need to be a strict regulation, monitored, to assure there was a healthy safe enclosure. Without the vocal support of this by residents wishing to keep chickens, the township is correct in not allowing this at this time. Only my opinion.
Joli Taryla: The regulations are what I was trying to get passed. Very strict ones in fact.
Phyllis Simpson: I personally have not been following the various comments on this issue. My comment above was my own opinion based on my neighbor's chickens, which she has invested heavily in to keep them safe from predators. In her first year of keeping chickens and before creating a remarkable compound to keep them safe, she had had heartbreaking vicious attacks from fox and/or weasels. She is a very responsible chicken owner. We live in Milford Township.
Mike Riker: No we are all over regulated now. It's really not that hard to keep chickens.
Kenneth Hubeny: Chickens eat ticks and slugs just to name a few. Time for civil disobedience folks. Everyone go buy chickens for your back yard. Tractor supply has chicks.
SpankynDarla Amaniera: I'd rather have the chickens then some of my neighbors that just throw their garbage out on their front lawns. Yup, chickens would make better neighbors.
Jeff Nemeth: This is so sad because with a chicken or two kept properly will eat ticks. Wish I knew, would have attended.
Mario Soares: How about the addiction problem in our county... Address that never mind a few chickens.
Elaine Edwards: With Lyme disease on the rise, perhaps we should be required to have chickens. Not banned. Sad.
Pete Sabo: Was this kept a secret? If I knew I would have went. I've been waiting for the outcome. Typical.....
Rosemary Bayliss: I wish they would vote to have no toilets as lawn ornaments!
Glenn Sophie: Egg laying chickens should be allowed. Roosters should be banned. As usual they don't know much about the subject.
Phyllis Simpson: My neighbor has both chickens and roosters, What is wrong with roosters?
Joli Taryla: The proposed ordinance did ban roosters and only allowed 6 hens per acre.
Glenn Sophie: Phyllis Simpson the roosters are very noisy. People that do shift work need their sleep.
Mike Elston: If you don't want animals as neighbors, move back to the city where you came from......
Susan Haines: Anybody interested in purchasing 685 acres there in Dingman Township? On Log Tavern Road.
Ronda Heinrich: Bunch of city folks deciding what goes on in your backyards...
