Our elected officials should make it easier to vote
To the Editor:
On June 21, the Pike County Commissioners "pushed-back" about Reggie Cheong-Leen's concern that a shortage of voting places and machines in Pike County is a form of voter repression, causing voters to wait in long lines in order to vote. As reported in the Pike County Courier, the Commissioners noted:
"Osterberg said the long lines happen only during Presidential election years. The real issue is voter turnout, he said: most of the time, when the turnout is low, as shown by voter statistics, the number of machines is more than adequate everywhere.”
Consider the logic in this statement. Osterberg is in effect hoping that voter turnout is low so that the legally required number of machines and sites are not needed. Is it not possible, Mr. Osterberg, that one reason people do not turn out is because they are frustrated with of the long lines? Our elected officials should be complying with the Pennsylvania state law and making it easier, not harder for us to vote.
Thank you Reggie for pointing out this issue.
