Setting the record straight on the Shohola Waterfowl Management Area
To the Editor:
This article ("For the Love of Swamps") in the June 9 Pike County Courier on page two has a lot of misinformation in it.
The correct name is Shohola Waterfowl Management Area, and it is located on State Game Land's (SGL's) 180.
This Management Area was not created for anglers; it was created for waterfowl management.
This wetland is managed for current and future waterfowl management practices that will not only increase and enhance the nesting and feeding sites for native ducks and geese and also migratory waterfowl.
You are not allowed to enter the Propagation Area so kayakers, and yes even hikers are not allowed to enter the Propagation Area.
The Propagation Area is clearly marked by metal signs.
State Game lands are purchased through the sales of hunting and trapping licenses.
Funded primarily by hunting and furtaker license sales, State Game Lands timber, mineral and oil/gas revenues and a federal excise tax on sporting arms and ammunition, the Commission is almost entirely supported by hunters and trappers or assets that have been procured with license dollars.
The Commission does not receive state General Fund appropriations. More than half its annual revenue comes from license sales, a relatively fixed income source. License fees cannot be increased without approval of the General Assembly, and fee increases have historically come only about every 10 years.
