Tonkin has the prosecutorial experience to put criminals behind bars

    To the Editor:
Just like the jingles companies put out to pitch their new product, politicians put out slogans to sell themselves to the voters.

In the race for district attorney here in Pike County, the two candidates have very different messages. District Attorney Ray Tonkin says, "There is no substitute for experience,” and that he is an “experienced prosecutor with proven results." District Attorney Tonkin is being clear and on point about why he should be re-elected. He is reminding voters that as the case against Eric Frein moves forward, someone who doesn’t need on-the-job- training is ready, willing, and able to get the job done.

On the other hand, Mrs. Gaughan is telling voters that she “committed to core American values." One can only presume she considers those values to be “Honor, Respect and Commitment,” as her billboards read. Those slogans are about as broad and vague as President Obama’s campaign mantra of “Hope” and “Change."

Mrs. Gaughan keeps saying that there needs to be a change. I don’t know why we would want to change murderers, drug dealers, and child predators being found guilty and going to state prison. All those things have happened under District Attorney Tonkin, and he is the only candidate running who can say he has prosecuted criminals.

I don’t want to hope Mrs. Gaughan learns how to be a prosecutor in time for the Frein case to get to trial. I don’t want a change from an experienced prosecutor. That’s why I’ll be voting for Ray Tonkin for District Attorney on May 19.
