Unprecedented PA Latino voter organizing to be celebrated Tuesday night
Make the Road Action in Pennsylvania (MRAPA), the grassroots advocacy organization representing Latino communities in Berks, Lehigh Counties, and the Northeast Pennsylvania (NEPA) region, has responded to the anti-Latino politics of hate pervasive in this election cycle by mobilizing Latino voters and their Allies on an unprecedented level. Tuesday evening hundreds of MRAPA members will be gathering in their Reading Organizing Center for a vote count party. On Wednesday at noon MRAPA will hold a debrief press conference in the same Organizing Center.
As part of MRAPA’s successful voter engagement program member volunteers and over 100 full time canvassers have house visited over 55,000 voting households and had face to face conversations with over 17,320 voters in Berks County and throughout the Lehigh Valley. As a result of these conversations thousands of residents have filled out vote pledge cards and made voting plans. These conversations have focused on issues voters care most about in addition to candidate support. Top recurring issues of support among voters visited are winning a raise in the federal minimum wage, fair full funding for education, and immigration reform.
“Politicians like Trump and Toomey have made anti-Latino attacks a cornerstone of their hate filled campaigns. In so doing they are dismissing the huge voting power of Latinos and our allies.” Said Adanjesus Marin, State Director Make the Road Action in Pa. “Our community is extremely excited to show Trump and Toomey on Election Day that we are organized and will never again be dismissed,” continued Marin.
The Vote County Party beginning Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. will feature hot food, a Latin DJ, and over 100 members joyously celebrating. The press conference the following day at noon will debrief the election results and preview MRAPA’s action plan for continuing to organize around the issues voters identified, and our deepened involvement in 2017 local elections.
