New library referendum
I see that new Milford library project has found vociferous support by the local Chamber of Commerce. For some reason or another, it has been remarkably quiet on the library design front for a while, which is probably to be likened to the calm before the storm. Rather than to find ourselves suddenly lumbered with a “carbuncle” that will haunt (and ruin) the center of Milford for decades, why not have a referendum of the Milford residents on the issue? They are the ones who will have to live with the new library, and I have greater trust in their judgment than in that of parties with vested interests. I am also convinced that the Milford residents will see through the “selling point” of this hideous design that it is “very green”. As much as we all support any constructive step towards creating a greener environment that enhances the quality of life, building something “green” does not mean that we have to settle for something in between Bauhaus-style and twisted Frank Lloyd Wright. This is, after all, about creating an important asset for our community, and I hate to see it ruined by a monstrosity of the style that Sir Richard Rogers inflicted on Paris (in the form of the Centre Pompidou) or on London (in the form of the Lloyd’s Building and the new London Heathrow Terminal 5). Let’s build something for the people of Milford, and not for the fancy ideas and egos of architects. Jurgen W Schulze Milford
