New Milford Library
To the editor: I’ve been scratching my head in disbelief ever since seeing the artist rendition of the proposed new library. The son of the woman whose name is to honorably appear over the library doors sits on both the Library Board and the Milford Architectural Review Board. The architectural double-standards floor me. This same board endowed with the power of rendering civil fines has secured the removal of a vinyl storm door, a steel entrance door and enforcement of other “standards”. Back in the 1970’s Burger King wanted to put a store fashioned in a Colonial motif on the same site that the library intends to build. It was shot down by our town fathers. Now the library, whose board is filled with long time Milford residents, most of whom I greatly respect, proudly puts forth this very modern looking building. If this modern design prevails, Milford Borough Council ought to rescind the Historic Review Board ordinance post-haste. Otherwise, look out. The discrimation lawsuits will bury the town in legal debts. Ask the people of Westfall Township how they feel about being drawn into discrimation suits by some of their leaders. If we are going to agree to having “historical standards” then the library board needs to go back to the architect and demand a Colonial exterior. That should have been his very first instruction and guiding principle. Greg Yetter Milford
