Our bridge safety
To the editor: The directors and officers of the Dingmans Choice and Delaware Bridge Company (DCDBC) are reaching out to the public in response to the recent bridge collapse in Minnesota. When terrible events such as this occur and lives are lost, it is natural for people to wonder if such a tragedy could happen to them too. We would like to share the steps taken each year to ensure that the Dingmans Bridge remains safe for the public to use. Since 1980, an independent engineering firm, Hartman Engineering, has performed field inspections of the Dingmans Bridge for two weeks each June. The inspection is completed by a certified bridge inspector, and supervised by a professional engineer. This work involves a thorough examination of all components and connections. All items are rated using the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration Condition ratings. Selected bridge components are also inspected using dye-penetrant to detect possible cracks. Once the inspection results are compiled, the DCDBC works in conjunction with the engineers to address any findings during the annual bridge closure each September. The most recent inspection of the Dingmans Bridge was completed on June 15, 2007. While lane reductions each June and the bridge closure each September create an inconvenience to patrons, the preventative measures taken each year preserve the integrity of the bridge structure. A large portion of toll revenue goes directly into maintaining this historic bridge. When asked to comment on the inspection and maintenance program for the Dingmans Bridge, Dr. Richard J. Hartman, PE, of Hartman Engineering, said, “We have been inspecting the bridge and designing the maintenance repairs since 1980. It is work we take very seriously, and the tragedy in Minnesota illustrates its importance. We want to reassure the people who use the bridge that the partnership of Hartman Engineering and the Bridge Company is dedicated to continuously maintaining the safety of the bridge.” The officers and directors of DCDBC appreciate the public’s confidence in the safety of the Dingmans Bridge. We hope that the additional information provided here will build on that confidence, as we continue to earn your trust for many, many years to come. Carol A.
