Pedestrian safety needs improvement
In May, 2009, I wrote a letter to your paper regarding the tragic death of Joanne Grecco. It is nearly a year later and another woman, Paula Conklin is (nearly) struck by a car. In my letter, I suggested that the traffic light be adjusted, the speed limit be reduced, stop signs be installed, cell phone use be banned, and stricter traffic fines be be enacted and enforced. Can NONE of the suggestions I made at that time be implemented? I have been advised by Penn Dot that Milford Borough owns and maintains the traffic light that forces pedestrians to cross the street as cars are making right and left turns onto Broad Street. Automobile traffic gets the green light FIRST to make their turns and as they are turning, pedestrians THEN get the walk sign! This system is bizarre and needs to be changed. It is too confusing for the drivers and is dangerous for pedestrians and drivers alike. I empathize with our councilpersons’ and police chief s frustration and applaud wholeheartedly their decision to take on this issue. Many Milford residents and tourists walk in town and we can’t find any safe places to cross. It is another tragedy waiting to happen. How sad. Mary Ann Gittens Milford
