Adult storytelling, after dark

MILFORD — Here's an event for adults 21 and older, coming to the Milford Readers and Writers Festival this weekend.
"Milford RAW," an open mic forum for storytelling, poetry, and spoken word recitations, will be held at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Upper Delaware GLBT Center, 201 East Harford St., Milford (Historic Old Schoolhouse, lower level).
Share your writing and make your voice heard.
Light fare will be provided by The Forklift Cafe, as well as a complimentary signature "mocktail," the Tequila Mockingbird. A nominal donation is requested.
The UDGLBT Center is sponsor of the open mic and another forum on Sunday.
Tim Murphy, a New York City-based writer on LGBT issues, culture, and politics, and the author of the new novel, "Christodora," will engage in conversation with East Village performance artist Shelly Mars at the Fauchere Meeting Center at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2.
"Christodora" follows a diverse set of characters whose fates intertwine in an iconic building in Manhattan's East Village, the Christodora. Moving kaleidoscopically from the Tompkins Square Riots and the attempts by activists to galvanize a true response to the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, to a future New York City of the 2020s, where subzero winters are a thing of the past, Christodora recounts the heartbreak wrought by AIDS, illustrates the allure and destructive power of hard drugs, and brings to life the ever-changing city itself.
Shelly Mars is a performance artist, actor and printmaker based in New York. Since starting performing in San Francisco in the early 1980s, Mars has done everything from improvisational stage work to voiceovers to movies and is best known for hermonologues and gender-bending portrayals of various subcultures, with a focus on queer culture. Also of interest is that Aaron Hicklin, the proprietor of One Grand Books in Narrowsburg, N.Y., and the editor-in-chief of Out Magazine, will present a pop-up bookstore in the Patisserie Fauchere the weekend of the festival.
