All that jazz
An art performed in retrospective DINGMANS FERRY When bass player Don Miller and his quartet perform on March 20 at Dingman-Delaware Middle School in Dingmans Ferry, they really will be playing all that jazz. From old-time Dixieland to swing, bebop to bossa nova, and funk to contemporary, the Don Miller Band will lead a music-filled trip from Jelly Roll Morton’s era to the twenty-first century. It would be hard to imagine anyone better to lead such a journey, for Miller has performed every style of jazz with musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, George Benson, Slide Hampton, Mongo Santamaria, and Clark Terry. He is so versatile--he plays both acoustic and electric bass--that he has even appeared with pop stars like Britney Spears, Sha Na Na, and The Marvelettes. Marsha Rose of Heat Beat Magazine has called Miller a “bassist, arranger, composer extraordinaire,” lauding his “total mastery, hop-scotching between pop, rock, R&B, and jazz with seamless virtuosity.” Adds Karl Stober of eJazzNews.com, “He will never let you forget what jazz should be!” Miller’s bandmates are masters of their instruments, too. They include saxophonist and flutist Eric Person, pianist Eric Olsen, and percussionist Eliot Sigmund, three veterans who have jammed with the legends and won praise for their recordings. The concert is presented by Kindred Spirits Arts Programs, a nonprofit organization that produces concerts and music education programs in northeastern Pennsylvania. The performance begins at 4 p.m., Tickets are $15 at the door; children under 12 are admitted free. For more, visit www.kindredspiritsprograms.org/.
