Art competition seeks entrants

    STROUDSBURG — The Education Committee of the Monroe County Historical Association is currently accepting submissions for the Fraktur Art competition to be held and displayed at the Driebe Freight Station Art Gallery, Stroudsburg. The Fraktur competition is open to grades K-12 including home-schooled students. Fraktur is a Pennsylvania German art and calligraphy form using symbolic images including hearts, birds, tulips, etc. Fraktur had a unique use among the Pennsylvania German people who settled in Monroe County and the surrounding area, i.e., record-keeping (birth, baptism, wedding), and school honors. For examples of Fraktur art, visit the Stroud Mansion research library at 900 Main Street, Stroudsburg. The deadline for submitting artwork is April 18, 2008. The Monroe County Historical Association will host a Gallery Reception and Awards Presentation on Friday, May 2, 2008 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm for family and friends and will be open to the public on Saturday, May 3, 2008 from 2:00 - 8:00 pm as part of downtown Stroudsburg’s 1st Saturday events.
