Icelandic Impressions' at Photo Guild

MILFORD Highlands Photographic Guild in Milford is showcasing “Icelandic Impressions,” photos by Karen Kruger. Her images of Iceland, taken during August 2008 provide both realistic and impressionistic examples of the Icelandic landscape and culture. The exhibit will run until Oct. 8. “Photographing a rainbow at midnight was only the first of many unexpected encounters in Iceland last summer. Outside of Reykjavik, where two thirds of the population lives, it is sparsely populated and in some places, quite wild,” Kruger said. Considered part of Europe, the landscape more closely resembles that of the American West. Natural beauty is vast and varied - waterfalls, glaciers, geysers and thermal features. There are wide open spaces and huge skies. The light has a different quality, perhaps owing that there is 20 hours of it each day in August. The colors are more saturated and reflections off glass and water appear at every turn. Flowers and buildings splash color against the natural backdrop of green, blue and brown. The architecture, too, celebrates light, allowing it to penetrate the interiors at every opportunity. The Highlands Photographic Guild at 224 Broad Street (Wachovia Bank Building) is open Friday - Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. More information about the gallery, its members or the current exhibit can be found at www.highlandsphotoguild.com or by calling 570-296-2440 during gallery hours.
