Kathleen Spicer's sculpture at Alliance Gallery

NARROWSBURG, N.Y. n An exhibition of sculptures by Kathleen Spicer titled “The Shape of Things” opens at the Alliance Gallery in Narrowsburg on Friday, June 8, with an artist’s reception from 7 - 9 p.m. The exhibit will be on view through June 29. Sculptor Kathleen Spicer describes her work as “a hybrid that bridges the gap between painting and object.” Her sculptures are not purely abstract, but are “clearly abstractions of organic life,” she explains. “The work is mathematical, natural, animated, sensual, analytic, and has a bit of humor.” Spicer’s vibrantly colorful sculptures are like animated, sculpted paintings in space. The fluid and lively forms are built from wood. “The work is all about energy and an endless flow of life. Shapes pass through each other and are all inter-woven. There is no sense of a beginning or ending,” the artist explains. Positive and negative spaces are equally important in each piece. And the finished work has a sense of life beneath the smooth, varnished surface. “It is always my intention to create work that conveys exuberant, positive energy and an emotional charge normally found in living things,” says Spicer, who received her BFA from Parsons School of Design in 1985 and was a 2001 recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. “The work does not sit still, but activates the space it occupies.” Spicer had her first solo exhibit at Alliance Gallery in 1995 and has an extensive curatorial record, numerous shows for the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance. This exhibit, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County, NY, and is made possible in part with funding from the Visual Arts Program of the New York State Council on the Arts. Alliance Gallery is located at the Delaware Arts Center at 37 Main Street, Narrowsburg, N.Y.
