Milford — The Church of the Good Shepherd and Saint John the Evangelist is continuing its tradition of being the community’s center for musical life. More than any other of Milford’s historic buildings, the church seems to spring up out of the very ground on which it stands. Its walls are built from the very stones laid down ages ago when glaciers retreated at the end of the last Ice Age. The church community traces its roots to 1856 when a group of townspeople with names like Fauchere, Mott, Pinchot, and Quick gathered together to found an Episcopal parish in Milford. Since its founding, the church has been a center of Milford’s spiritual and musical life. That tradition continued into the present with the recent installation of a hand built Schantz pipe organ. Those traditions again be highlighted on Saturday Aug. 11 at 6:30 p.m. when the church is the setting for the fifth concert in Kindred Spirits Arts Programs’ 2007 season featuring the ensemble Breve, performing French and German works from the Baroque. The ensemble consists of Deborah Booth - flute & recorder, Louise Schulman - viola & violin, and Gabriel Shuford - harpsichord. The concert is a benefit to help the parish defray the costs of acquiring its new organ. In addition to the music of Bach, Couperin, and Telemann, the Schantz organ with its 25 ranks and 1600 pipes will be showcased with an Interlude performed by well known organist Henry Repp. The combination of inspired works by masters of the Baroque and the sounds of the organ in the sacred space is sure to stir the soul. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children under the age of 12. Tickets are available from the Gallery at Forest Hall, corner of Broad and Harford streets, Milford. For reservations call 570-296-4299. This concert is generously sponsored by Century 21 Roy B. Hull and GMAC.
