Kindred Spirits presents Nestor Torres
Milford n America, the place, encompasses two continents, a vast array of wildly diverse landscapes stretching from Pole to Pole. The cultures that make up America are equally diverse and have created multiple musical landscapes. The fourth of Kindred Spirits’ concerts for the 2007 season travels across these musical landscapes and will take the listener on a “Journey Within” guided by gifted flutist Nestor Torres. A native of Puerto Rico, a place where European, African, and Native musical traditions have blended into a unique soundscape, Torres began flute lessons at age 12, studied at the Escuela Libre de Musica and attended Puerto Rico’s Inter-American University before moving to New York where he perfected his improvisational style playing Cuban dance music known as Charanga. For the 7 p.m., July 14 concert to be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Broad Street, in Milford, Torres will perform works by composers as varied as Bach, DeBussy, Yip Harburg and Harold Arlen as well as music from throughout the New World. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children. With music spanning the continents and the centuries, the concert is certain to be an adventure in the true sense of the word.
