NARROWSBURG, N.Y. — An exhibition demonstrating the process of creating large outdoor sculpture, “Pencil to Public,” opens in the Loft Gallery at the Delaware Arts Center in Narrowsburg on Friday, May 11, with an artist’s reception from 7 to 9 p.m. The exhibit is curated by Naomi Teppich and will be on view through June 29. “Creating a public work involves thinking about building a sculpture that can withstand the outdoor elements, be placed safely in an appropriate environment, and captivate a greater audience that enjoys exploring art in an urban or rural setting,” explains Naomi Teppich, a Galilee-based sculptor and the curator behind “Pencil to Public.” The first step for an artist is usually a sketch or drawing, followed by a maquette, or scale model, which the artists will use to create the larger sculpture. Building an oversized sculpture in a studio can be a challenge, and moving it to its outdoor location often requires special funding and equipment for installation. For Teppich, “the exhibit is about the creative process artists use to make their ideas a reality.” “Pencil to Public” features drawings, maquettes, and photographs of completed public sculptures, as well as artists’ statements. The show includes the work of the following nine artists: Richard Brachman, Ursula Clark, Janet Goldner, Robert Friedman, Nancy Lew Lee, James Raglione, Johan Sellenraad, Kathleen Spicer, and Teppich. This exhibit, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County, N.Y., and is made possible in part with funding from the Visual Arts Program of the New York State Council on the Arts. The Loft Gallery is located at the Delaware Arts Center at 37 Main Street, Narrowsburg, N.Y. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the exhibit call 845-252-7576 or visit www.ArtsAllianceSite.org .
