MILFORD — The Highlands Photo Guild this month is showing “The Lagniappes of France,” a new collection of photographs by Agnes Rizzo. “Many years ago,” Rizzo relates, “I was fascinated by the word lagniappe, pronounced lanyape, a French word that means an unexpected surprise or gift. After recently traveling to the south of France, I have experienced many lagniappes! Whether it is the windows of the many pastry shops, the colorful flea markets, the breathtaking countryside, the elderly men playing “pedanque” in the parks or the very stimulating bull fights; France is filled with lagniappes.” Agnes Rizzo says she is a self-taught photographer who learned many of her skills in her own darkroom working late into the night after her children were asleep. She had the unique experience of working side by side in the darkroom with her father from who she inherited her first 35mm film camera when she was 12 years old. In 1982, Rizzo won “Best in Show” at the New Jersey State Fair and continues to receive awards and honors for her photographs. “While I still use 35mm film, I have now added a digital camera to my collection. Although my camera is amazing, I have always thought it is not the camera that makes a great shot, it is the eye of the photographer.” “The Lagniappes of France” will be on exhibit through Nov. 2. The Highlands Photographic Guild at 224 Broad Street (Wachovia Bank Building) is open Friday - Sunday from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. For more information visit www.highlandsphotoguild.com or call 570-296-2440 during gallery hours.
