Sunday is Van Campen Day in the Water Gap
Layton, N.J. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and the Walpack Historical Society will hold the annual Van Campen Day celebration at the historic Van Campen Inn from noon until 5 p.m. on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 19. “This is a truly wonderful event that brings the 1700s to life. It would not happen without the dedicated volunteers from the Walpack Historical Society,” said Superintendent John J. Donahue. The day’s events include guided hikes along Military Trail, apple cider making, craft demonstrations, and tours of the Van Campen Inn, a graceful stone structure on Old Mine Road in New Jersey. Black powder musketry, militia drills and camp life will be performed by re-enactors of the Seven Years’ War and Revolutionary War periods. There is no charge. The inn is on the unpaved section of Old Mine Road, four miles south of Peters Valley and 20 miles north of I-80 (Exit 1). For further information, call Park Headquarters at 570-426-2452 (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or the Walpack Historical Society at 973-948-4903.
