Tusten theatre hosts Broadway performers NARROWSBURG - Broadway greats Cris Groenendaal (“Phantom of the Opera”, “Sweeney Todd”, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”) and Sarah Rice (“Sweeney Todd...”, “The Fantasticks”, “The Music Man”) share the spotlight in “The Phantom plays the Tusten”,an intimate evening of songs celebrating life, love, and the slings and arrows of the outrageousness of relationships, on Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Nov. 19, at the Tusten Theatre, 210 Bridge Street, Narrowsburg, New York. The pianist for the evening will be Sue Anderson. Beyond “Phantom of the Opera,” Cris Groenendaal’s Broadway credits include “Passion,” “Sunday in the Park With George”, and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”. He originated the role of Father in the national tour of “Ragtime” and is solo Broadway/Cabaret show has been featured with major symphony orchestras throughout the United States. As a young singer in New York, Sarah Rice was cast as The Girl in the long-running original off-Broadway production of “The Fantasticks”, Anne in “A Little Night Music”, Cunegonde in “Candide”, at the Guthrie, and Gretel in “Hansel and Gretel”, among several other roles. Then Stephen Sondheim and Harold Prince chose her to become part of musical theatre history. She was cast as the original Johanna in “Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” on Broadway for which she won a Theatre World Award and recorded on RCA. This recording won a Grammy for best show album and Sweeney swept the Tony awards, including best show. Since then, Sarah’s leading soprano roles include Gilda in Rigoletto, Susanna in The Secret of Susanna, Belle in A Christmas Carol for Eastern Opera Theatre, and Elizabeth in Swan Song at the York Theatre Company. The Phantom Plays the Tusten is presented by Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and produced by Broadway Concerts Direct, Admission is $15 ($13 for students and seniors).
