David R. Holbert
It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of David R. Holbert, who departed this life on Monday, March 9, 2026. Dave passed away peacefully at home, wrapped in the warmth and comfort of the family he so dearly loved.
Born on August 8, 1956, in Scranton, Pa., Dave was the son of the late Donald R. and Adelaide (Sennett) Holbert. He carried with him the values of his upbringing throughout his life—integrity, grit, and a steadfast commitment to his community.
Alongside his brother and late wife, Susan (Davidson) Holbert, Dave owned and operated Holbert Explosives in Lackawaxen. Together, they built more than just a business; they built a respected legacy in the local industry defined by partnership and reliability.
While his work was in the rugged terrain of Pennsylvania, his heart belonged entirely to his home. Dave was the beloved husband of Maria (Giles) Murphy, with whom he shared a life of mutual support and deep affection. As a father, brother, and friend, he was a steady anchor—a man whose presence meant safety, humor, and unwavering love.
Dave’s memory will be forever cherished by his wife, Maria Murphy; children, Dr. Chelsea Holbert, Chad Gerard (son-in-law) Matthew Kowalik, Alicia Kowalik (daughter-in-law), and Dr. Kimberly Kowalik Smith, Timothy Smith (son-in-law), Ryan Murphy, Christina Murphy (daughter-in-law); siblings, Sue Ellen Saad, and Wayne Holbert and a wide circle of friends who were better for having known him. He was beloved by his 8 grandchildren, Madeline Walter, Aedan Walter, Joanie Nieves, Justin Kowalik, Ryan Kowalik, Richard Kowalik, Adelaide Gerard, and Cora Gerard.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, March 16, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Stroyan Funeral Home, 405 West Harford Street, Milford, PA 18337. Services will follow 5 p.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Keith Raser officiating.
