Gretel Metzger, 86, of Milford, Pa., passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Delaware Valley Assisted Living Center in Matamoras, Pa. Gretel was a devoted mother, grandmother and community member. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Gretel was the daughter of the late Carl and Helen (Woods) Huber. She was born on January 11, 1938, in Glen Ridge, NJ. She attended grade school and high school in Montclair, NJ. She graduated from Centenary College for Women in 1958 with an associate degree in arts, which must have been where she enhanced her creativity and decorative style.
In 1964, Gretel came to Milford and she quickly fell in love with the town and the people of Milford. Gretel, alongside with her now deceased husband, Ed Metzger, and her sons, was best known as the owner and progressive operator of Apple Valley Restaurant and Apple Valley Village. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Milford and dedicated much time to the Milford Food Pantry and Milford Garden Club. She loved to travel, watch baseball, and host theme parties for family and friends.
Gretel is survived by her son Eric Engstrom; son Ted Metzger and his wife Dawn; son Steve Metzger and his wife Patty; 10 grandchildren, Eric Engstrom II, John Engstrom and his wife Kacey, Isaiah Engstrom, Anne Engstrom, Elizabeth Engstrom, Elisa Engstrom, Madison Mendivel Metzger, Jordan Metzger, Austin Kuhn, Derek Metzger; and one great grandchild, Leah Engstrom. She is predeceased by her husband Ed Metzger and her two brothers, Stephen and Derek Huber.
Graveside services will be at Milford Cemetery on July 13, 2024 at 11 a.m. Memorial donations can be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 144 E Lackawanna Ave. Suite 218, Olyphant, PA 18447.
