Joseph E. Herbert Jr. of Matamoras died on Monday, July 20, 2015, at Belle Reve Senior Living Center, Milford. He was 85.

Son of the late Joseph and Flora Mae(Hunt) Herbert, he was born on Dec. 6, 1929. He was a graduate of Port Jervis High School. He was married to late Betty Jean (Compton) Herbert, who he married on Aug. 26, 1950, in Hawley.

He lived in the area all his life. He was a stock car racer as a young man, and partnered with his father in running a lawn mower shop. He was a truck driver for many years with Miller Oil Company in Milford, and later worked for Luhrs Hardware. His favorite times were camping and traveling to Vermont, Florida, and Canada. He was a talented woodworker and craftsman. He was a hard-working and supportive husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Survivors include his son, Thomas and his wife, Arleen, of Matamoras; daughter, Jo Ann Deacon, wife of the late Craig Deacon of Chalfont, Pa.; sister-in-law, Marion McKean and her husband, Edgar, of Shohola; grandchildren, David, Jessica, Danielle, Wendy, and Lindsey; and great-grandchildren, Anderson and Justin. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Herbert.

As per his wishes, there will be no services. Cremation took place at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in the Branchville Cemetery, Branchville, N.J.
