Juanita Campbell-Singh of Dingmans Ferry, Pa., died on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017. She was 67.
Daughter of the late James "Sunny" Johnson and Henrietta Smoak, she was born on Feb. 27, 1949, in Harlem, N.Y.
She was a graduate of the Harlem Hospital School of Nursing in 1973. In a career spanning more than 40 years, she helped individuals and families as a registered nurse, with the bulk of her tenure bringing health and wellness to the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey.
She was the paragon of a life well-lived. A breast cancer survivor since 2002, she would exhaust herself helping others whenever and however she could. When she wasn't being the family nurse, you could find her spinning her slots, searching an exotic cruise destination, swimming away from sandy shores, or sharing her Flip Pan collection with thousands of friends on Facebook. Ever the activist, she supported her honorary nephew Barack Obama and the Democratic Party, and participated in the Million Man, Million Family, and Million Woman Marches.
Forever family first, she would talk to her children daily. She was blessed with a son and daughter, plus two step-children, Shelly-Ann and Nathalee, raised as her own from a previous marriage. She united families with Rawel Singh and his two children in October 2000.
Juanita once said: "My life has always been centered around family. We are all connected by the love of one another. This is how we grow and prosper. Remember always who you are and where you come from. Stay focused, and keep your eye on the prize."
Survivors include her husband, Rawel Singh; two children, Orrett and Averil; granddaughter, Jaylene; brother, Eric; sisters, Darlene and Caressa; nieces, Quianna, Andrewa, Alexandra, Crystal, and Kim; nephew, Jonathan; and a host of other friends, family, and strangers. She has been reunited with her lifelong friend, Priscilla Bowen.
A memorial service was held at Ruth Fellowship Ministries in Plainfield, N.J., with the Rev. Tracey L. Brown officiating.
To honor Juanita's granddaughter Jaylene, memorial donations may be made to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (chop.edu).
Arrangements were by Stroyan Funeral Home, Milford, Pa.
