19 dogs rescued by humane society

SHOHOLA A lucky 19 “lap-sized” puppies and young dogs were rescued this past week by the Pike County Humane Society (PCHS) in response to a call reporting unattended dogs, essentially abandoned in a Delaware Township home. The home’s landlord and a relative of the tenant who had been renting the house reported that the dogs’ owner had taken ill, was no longer staying in the house and could not provide for the dogs’ care. The landlord and the relative informed the PCHS that the owner had authorized them to release the dogs to the Humane Society for their continued care, and to hopefully provide for their adoption if they were found to be suitable (which fortunately for all, they seem to be!) The 19 rescued dogs, seven females and 12 males, are all thought to include a combination of small terrier /Lhasa Apso, poodle and Shih Tzu breeding, though their exact heritage can not be determined. They range from about one to five years of age and each weighs in at around 15-or-so pounds. According to PCHS Executive Director Barry Heim, the rescued dogs appeared to have been basically well fed and properly sheltered. Although infected with fleas, they were not thought to have been abused. Heim noted that once at the shelter they’ll be treated for fleas, de-wormed, bathed and groomed, while receiving any required initial veterinary attention, neutering, as well as shelter administered medical treatments prior to adoption. The newcomers almost doubled the number of dogs now at the shelter. “We estimate that it will cost about $200 per dog to take care of this,” Heim noted, “and we are appealing to the community to help offset these costs with adoptions and donations, as well as on-going support of our fundraisers.” Call 570-296-7654 for hours, directions and more information on offering help. . Visitors are invited to see these newcomers to the shelter, as well as some 25 other dogs, 25 cats and several other pets awaiting adoption at the Humane Society’s facilities at 189 Lee Road, in Shohola. Please call ahead before visiting; the shelter is closed on Mondays. Donations can also be mailed to the Pike County Humane Society at P.O. Box 255, Milford, PA 18337 and can be made through PayPal at the PCHS website at www.pikecountyhumanesociety.petfinder.com where more information is also available.
