An hour on the D&H Canal
Milford Davis R. Chant Realtors and Realtor Bill Cole will be hosting a very memorable event on behalf of the Safe Homes of Orange County Program on July 11. Safe Homes of Orange County (N.Y.) is a private, non-profit agency whose mission is to eliminate all forms of domestic violence through education, outreach and provision of comprehensive support services. The evening begins with a forty-five to sixty minute slide show presentation called, “An Hour in the History of the D & H Canal,” with a Q&A session following. Author Peter Osborne will give the evening’s special presentation. Known for his dynamic historical presentations throughout the tri-state area, Osborne tells the story of the Delaware and Hudson Canal and Gravity Railroad: From Canal way to Greenway. This slide show reveals the interesting and important history of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, one of the great transportation corporations of the nineteenth century, its impact on local communities and the efforts underway to preserve it today with a variety of techniques. A random drawing of an autographed copy of the newest book written by Peter Osborne, “Perseverance and Vigilance,” will take place at the close of the evening. “Perseverance and Vigilance: The History of the Decker Stone House” is a definitive history of the Fort Decker Museum of History and a must-have for those interested in the American Revolution, stone houses or buildings that might be haunted. “Safe Homes, to my understanding, is the only agency in Orange County designed exclusively to provide assistance to victims of domestic violence and providing a unique and unduplicated service to all members of the community,” said Davis Chant, Davis R. Chant Realtors Founder and Chairman of the Board. “We are proud to be able to show our support of such a worthy cause with a wonderful and interesting journey down history lane with one of our accomplished area writers. It’s a great way to relax for an hour and enjoy some delicious refreshments.” The event is free to the public and all are invited. Donations will be accepted and are encouraged on behalf of the Safe Homes of Orange County, but not necessary to attend. The Presentation at Chant’s Milford office at 106 East Harford Street, begins promptly at 5 p.m. and light refreshments will be served.
