Batty in the boro

If you look closely at the top right of this photo, you will see a small brown bat flying overhead during the Milford Architectural Review Board meeting Monday evening. An amused Code Enforcement Officer, Duane Kuhn, is also pictured, smiling about the stir it caused. Bats, regulars say, are a regular occurrence at the borough hall on warm summer nights when doors are left open. Kuhn waited for the animal to tire and deftly netted it with a large landing net, which is kept on hand for such occasions. He got to use it again after a second bat arrived later. After the entertainment, the board approved portions of an application by Billy Shi to begin restoration of the Harford House at 201 East Harford Street. The 18th Century home reputedly once hosted Lafayette and is the oldest one in Milford. The house, adjoining the site of the proposed new library, has been in disrepair for some years. Shi was warned last month about penalties for allowing deterioration that would require demolition. The board also agreed to get borough council approval for consultant help in drafting modifications to the historic district ordinance, which would address issues involving “adaptive reuse” of historic structures, such as the addition of lights and gutters where none existed in past.
