Funds will be used to purchase patient lift equipment PORT JERVIS, N.Y. - Nurses at Bon Secours Community Hospital, a member of Bon Secours Charity Health System, in Port Jervis, NY are pleased that the hospital will be able to purchase patient lift equipment with a $250,000 capital grant secured by New York State Senator John Bonacic (R. District 42). Borrowing from a popular military slogan, Sophie Crawford, RN, MS, vice president Patient Care Services, told her nurses, “Senator Bonacic has got your back.” Crawford said that manual lifting of patients and residents is a major cause of work-related back injury and strain at healthcare facilities. “To protect staff,” she explained, “it is crucial to use the correct mechanical aids and working methods in patient handling. Ceiling lifts are proven patient aids that satisfy all these criteria.” Bon Secours Community Hospital plans to use the grant to purchase the new Maxi Sky 600, advertised as the most technologically advanced ceiling lift on the market. The lift is an easy to operate system that allows a single caregiver to perform transfers by using a hand control without stress or strain and with no manual lifting. The lift has a capacity of 600 lbs. and is designed to meet the demands of handling heavier patients. “Our community hospitals are important to the health and well-being of all of us,” said Senator Bonacic. “I was pleased to work to secure this State funding to support the hospital and help enhance the patient-centered care that is delivered by Bon Secours.” Bon Secours Charity Health System includes three New York hospitals: Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern, and St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick. Bon Secours Charity Health System provides the services of a Certified Home Health Agency, two long-term care facilities, an assisted-living and adult-home facility, and several other community based medical programs serving nearly half a million people in seven counties and three states. Bon Secours Charity Health System is a member of the Bon Secours Health System, Inc., based in Marriottsville, Maryland which is a not-for-profit Catholic health system employing more than 19,000 caregivers in 9 states.
