Borough says, use sign or lose it

The Milford Borough Planning Commission on Monday recommended a new ordinance that would aim to eliminate unused, non-conforming sign structures in Milford, like this pictured Broad Street sign standard. Non-conforming signs were erected prior to the 1981 ordinance. While they don’t meet code requirements they can be used, but the new ordinance would provide a new definition for determining their disrepair or abandonment. Code Enforcement Officer Duane Kuhn proposed the change, which would allow the code enforcement officer to give a 45-day notice to owners of any unused, non-conforming sign structures, to resume use or dismantle them. Repairs to a non-conforming sign structure would be allowed only if repairs amounted to one-third or less of the sign’s total value. Kuhn could not estimate the number of existing signs that might be affected. The measure will move to the borough council in May. (Photo by David Hulse)
