Delaware Valley Elementary's ‘Cookie Share'

WESTFALL — One thing you may not know about Delaware Valley Elementary School’s secretary, Mrs. Sirico, is that she helps people by giving the gift of giving. To be more specific, she organizes a project which gives holiday cookies to senior citizens. She has been doing the Cookie Share for four years, which is great for the senior citizens. She does the Cookie Share because it makes everyone feel good and it brightens up everyone’s day. Before she delivers the cookies, she and many other volunteers have to make them, of course. Baking the cookies has to take at least a week, and she gathers at least 10-20 people, year after year, to bake the delicious treats. Plus, people outside of the school help her. These people are other school employees and their family members. The people who pay for all of the supplies needed to bake are the people who make them and help deliver them. What do they pay for; supplies! After the cookies are baked and wrapped up in homemade holiday packages, it’s delivering time. To decide where to send the cookies, Mrs. Sirico and her many helpers send them to Meals on Wheels to be delivered to their recipients. They are also delivered to local nursing homes. Many times, the same people get them and look forward to them each year. Sometimes, Mrs. Sirico even gets to hear how the people who got the cookies feel, because some send thank you cards. She says it’s great to read how happy the project made someone feel to receive their gift. Mrs. Sirico says she is grateful for all of those kind people who help bake or come to help assemble or deliver the bags of treats. They make many people’s day a little happier. “It’s great to see everyone have a good time,” she said. By Sam Evers - Mrs. Connell’s Sixth Grade
