PORT JERVIS , N.Y. — On June 14, the 2009 Port Jervis Soap Box Derby will be the city’s largest, as it celebrates an impressive anniversary. 150 drivers have registered and will make up this banner year derby in four divisions: Stock, Super Stock, Masters and Super Kids. Several of Port Jervis’ previous champions will be racing this year along with many newcomers to the sport. “It’s amazing to think that 10 years have gone by,” said derby originator, Bill Hockenberry, who enjoyed the sport as a child in the 1950’s. “I am so proud to be a part of this community event that brings us together year after year.” Hockenberry re-ignited the event in 2000 after reminiscing about its glorious history in Port Jervis. The first Soap Box Derby race in Port Jervis took place in the summer of 1947 and continued for ten more years until 1957. This year’s derby is the largest in Port Jervis history. The first year the derby came back to life drew 38 participants in one division. Now, the event has grown to 150 racers competing in four divisions and is closely monitored by over 2000 spectators on race day. Children ages 8-18 race the clock to become one of Port’s champions who then go on to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the All-American Soap Box Derby Race. A champ in each of the four divisions will win a trip of a lifetime to represent Port Jervis in this International Race in July. This year’s event is being sponsored by several organizations including its key sponsors: Kolmar Laboratories, 1490 ESPN Radio, Fox 96.7 and Fox 103.1. Derby Day is Sunday, June 14th this year and takes place on Sussex Street in Port Jervis, N.Y., throughout the day. The event will not only include racing. Several food and craft vendors will line the Sussex Street Hill as thousands of spectators look on and cheer for their favorite drivers.
