to world finals WESTFALL — The Delaware Valley High School Odyssey of the Mind structure team is currently holding a world record. After winning first place at state finals in April, the team will be competing at World Finals at the end of May in the structure problem, “Tee Structure,” which requires students to build a structure out of balsa wood and glue that weighs no more than 18 grams. At competition, the students must balance up to 10 golf balls on top of their structure and place weights on top of the structure to test its strength. DV held 835 pounds on its structure at state finals, which is currently the highest amount held at any Odyssey of the Mind competition this year. DV also balances the maximum 10 golf balls on top of its structure. The next highest weight held is 815 pounds by Rivercrest High School in Arkansas, according to results from other state and national competitions. In addition to testing the structure, the team presents a skit with a golf theme and also takes part in a top secret, on-the-spot competition called “spontaneous.” The DVHS structure team and the Dingman-Delaware Middle School theatrical team travel to the 29th annual Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at the University of Maryland in College Park May 31 to June 3. At World Finals the teams from Delaware Valley will compete against students from across the United States and from countries including Canada, China, Germany, Korea and Singapore.
