DINGMANS FERRY Community Expo annually showcases area not-for-profits and to that end, over 27 sponsored information displays and booths put out their messages recently at Camp Speers-Eljabar. Non-profit organizations and some businesses were on hand. They included: United Way, Country Ark Farm, Kiwanis Club, Dime Savings Bank, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Pocono Environmental Education Center, Wayne Memorial Hospital, Newton Hospital, Safe Haven, Pike County Alcohol & Drug Resource Center. Many of the booths had activities for children such as button making, coloring, touch and feel activities and kids’ giveaway items. Mary Stanley of Pike County Alcohol & Drug Resource Center was on hand with flyers and information booklets on addiction. Stanley said, “We go into the schools and work directly with student groups.” Stanley counsels students that are affected by family members with alcohol and drug related issues as well as drug addiction and prevention. They run a Monday evening, Teen and Recovery Group at the Health and Wellness Center in Milford. The meeting is led by mature Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous members with clean and sober time. “These kids are not bad kids. They are good kids with problems that have caused them to go down the wrong path,” said Stanley. For more information, call her at 570-409-8484 extension 501.
